According to Brian Massumi, affect takes place where, when rupture becomes impossible, small acts of resistance, "glimmers of counterpower," are kept alive. Affect here refers not exactly to emotion but to intensity, to what for Elizabeth Grosz is the "capacity to conceptualize, cognize, or think," what grounds an ethics in the Spinozist sense. This course will pursue this approach to affect to elaborate how intensity accounts for the production of individuating worlds as if deploying an apparatus, in the same way as Donna Haraway's "apparatuses of bodily production" produce bodies. Here "counterpower" works not only to dismantle unities but, more importantly and affirmatively, to construct or sustain processes.
